The Thumb

Once upon a time, "sticking out like a sore thumb" was totally frowned upon. Fast forward to nowadays, with the expansion and growth in popularity of social media, it seems like everyone is in a frenzy to make themselves known, remembered and immortalized- you know, STICK OUT. Even when Facebook became popular, the thumb was used to indicate that the users "like" a picture, status or video - the lone digit became a well known image of the site itself.

When you are on the job market, it is your duty to, like the first digit, stick out. Employers and Human Resource directors go through a sea of resumes each time they post a job opening. What makes yours different? What makes you unique? How will you convey your worth to the employer as they sift through the 104th Outline, Summary, Employment Experience List, etc?

Survive past the 6 seconds by incorporating the following tips:

  1. Be Truthful - No one likes a liar. Make sure that you do not "over fluff" or embellish duties or skills. This may get you call backs, but will create a horrible interview experience.

  2. Be Intriguing - Everyone is as unique as a snowflake, showcase your unusual, new, or otherwise fascinating or compelling qualities that are applicable to the position you wish to gain.

  3. Be Fitting - You may be the best candidate, but how do you fit into The Company's culture?

Good Luck, and happy hunting!!
